She makes sure Christmas comes for abused, neglected children

December 15, 2013

Such great stories come from great people! Barb Wagner, a 64 years old drives a dump truck and picks up Christmas presents in Wake County to children every year. “The gifts themselves are really great for these kids,” she says, “but the feeling that they’re important enough for someone to give them a gift is priceless.” Wagner volunteers as an advocate for child abused and neglected children. She first got into child advocacy when her youngest son was having problems in middle school. In return, her child was helped and she feels that she wanted to do the same for other children. Barb’s commitment and dedication for her work is graceful for others.

My Turn: Be a Guardian ad Litem volunteer

 December 13, 2013

Three months ago, Gaston County, two infants were dead because of child abuse. Such tragic case will inform people about the difficulties these children are exposed. Many Guardian ad Litem are volunteers who work with the court to advocate for children who are removed from their home because of abused or neglect. These advocates recommend the best for the kids’ future to the court. “Statistically, a child’s case moves more quickly through the court proceedings and their needs are better identified and met when they have a Guardian ad Litem to advocate for them. Unfortanely, there is still a need for volunteers because many children are not represented by a Guardian ad Litem.

Celebration honors Guardian ad Litem volunteers

A gathering at the Blockade Runner Resort in WrightsvilleBeach was hosted to celebrate local programs in the achievement for training volunteer Guardians ad Litem. “Thirty-one Guardian ad Litem volunteers with a combined 127 years of experience were recognized Sunday for their service at a ceremony celebrating the state program’s 30th anniversary.” Many of the volunteers work as independent voices and advocates for children in foster care in New Han-over and Pender counties. The roles of a Guardian ad Litem is to learn everything about the child situation and then choose the best recommendation to a judge.

Raising Awareness On Gangs In Leon County

Gangs in the United States are no surprise. In Tallahassee, Florida the present of gangs is there. A shooting may occur here and there which majority of the time will relate to gang activities. Leslie Rabon, Criminal Intelligence unit at the Leon County Sheriff’s Office words out message to Guardian ad Litem about local gangs. Gangs can provide the wants and needs to a child who does not have it, typical this is done in a delinquent act. Rabon also discuss the aspect of gangs in regards to how it affects other innocent kids. Many of the Guardian ad Litems were shocked and did not think that gangs would be present in their city. What is more disturbing is the fact that “Rabon added the oldest gang member she’s seen on record in Leon County was 64 and the youngest was 8.”

Leeds woman finds inspiration from Court Appointed Special Advocate

A blessed opportunity that fulfills motivation, encouragement and desire to become what she is today is phenomena. Danylle Carson was removed from her mother’s custody at age 7 and a guardian ad litem was appointed by court to her. It’s been more than 20 years and Carson still admires what her guardian ad litem has taught her. Carson was inspired to attend law school and one day serves the same role as her guardian ad litem. She is currently serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for other children.

PEORIA —

The young woman sat next to her lawyer at a table in front of a judge inside the courtroom that contains no jury box. While she mostly knew the outcome of her case in advance, the moment still packed a solid emotional punch and she poked at tears with a tissue bunched around her index finger.

“Good job,” a smiling Judge Mark Gilles said after legally returning her two daughters, who had been wards of the state for more than a year, into the custody of their mother. “You got it done.”

The woman exited Courtroom 424 in the Peoria County Courthouse and collapsed into one of the gray molded-plastic chairs that line both sides of the fourth floor hallway outside of the Juvenile Abuse and Neglect Court. The tears still came.

“It’s a happy ending,” said Joe, the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer who represented her children throughout the legal process, and who followed her out of the courtroom. The volunteers interviewed for this story asked that their last names not be used, so that no one could connect them to the details of any single case. “They don’t all turn out that way.”

Actually, most don’t start out that way. The CASA volunteer, Joe, was appointed to the case involving the woman and her children. Most cases aren’t as fortunate. At the end of the 2012-2013 fiscal year there were 1,009 pending abuse and neglect cases in the Peoria County Juvenile Court system. CASA has an available roster of 181 volunteers to call upon, leaving four out of five abuse and neglect cases in the county without a CASA volunteer.

The system works without them; it works better with them.

“(CASA volunteers) are the eyes and the ears for the judge outside of the courtroom,” said Dominique Alexandre, one of three Advocate Supervisors who work out of the locked-door office at the end of the fourth floor hallway. The courtroom is a 15-second commute. “The judge tends to choose the more complicated, murkier cases to assign to our volunteers, cases that need some clarity.”

Here’s the program’s written description of what it does:

“A CASA volunteer is a highly trained advocate that is; an information gatherer, obtaining all relevant facts about the child and the case; an advocate to ensure that those facts are brought before the court through reports presented to the court with copies to case parties, and a facilitator, to ensure that all fulfill their legal obligations to the child in a timely manner. A CASA volunteer is assigned to one case at a time and serves on that case until it closes.”

Asher’s Story

Southeastern Texas, a miracle boy name Asher Badgett would not have been able to live life as a normal child if he was not taken out of an abusive situation. Jamie Hoggie is a CASA volunteer and she received Asher’s case in December 2010. Asher’s was reported with 29 broken bones at eight-weeks old. This was one of the worst cases of child abuse the DA have received. Asher spent four days in the hospital just to start the healing process. Today, Asher’s grandfather, Gene Badgett has adopted his grandson. Asher is full of energy and is a very smart kid. The abuser is currently serving a prison term for the abuse.

CASA praises Sen. Williams as ‘big voice for little Texans’

Texas CASA public affairs Andrea Sparks said they were blessed with the legislative under Senator William, gave them an additional 4 millions to help the organization grow better. “The organization utilizes trained, volunteer child advocates to speak on behalf of such children, assist with placement and other services, prepare court reports and maintain records among other responsibilities.” Senate William bill will aim at strengthening CASA, improving the quality of foster care for children across the state and also improving mental health services for children in state custody.
