The miserable politics of rape at the highest level in our government are playing out today. Once more, sexual violence is in the spotlight as America’s second recent Supreme Court nominee (Kavanaugh) is being questioned about horrid behaviors of a sexual nature.
This topic has few friends. It remains under the surface until someone makes a painful accusation and the community accepts or rejects the accuser.
Our attention lately has been on the tens of million and hundreds of million dollar verdicts awarded to victims of church sanctioned child abuse (3 billion to date). “Sanctioned” because it is the underlying reason for the large awards – the church more or less refused to address the abuse allowing it to happen and continue.
There is likely no conversation more ugly and uncomfortable than that of repeated trauma and rape of five and ten year old children.
While church related child sex abuse continues to receive more and more press, lawsuits and attention across American , it is important to recognize that an exponentially larger number of children are raped and traumatized in their homes by their caregivers with numbers likely in the tens of millions.
CASA guardian ad Litems, law enforcement officers, public health and child protection workers know that our youngest citizens are exponentially more likely to be raped in their homes than in their churches and are coming to know the lifelong sentence of trauma that comes from child rape & torture. The World Health Organization defines torture as extended exposure to violence & deprivation. All of the children I worked with in Child Protective Services had been tortured.
Half of the children that I worked with in child protection as a CASA guardian ad Litem were sexually abused. One as young as two, several not yet four and the rest under ten years old when the abuse started. The abuse always went on for extended periods and their mental health and behavioral problems from the abuse were a burden that caused them great distress as they grew into adulthood. 80% of youth aging out of foster care lead dysfunctional lives.
