GA: Advocates: Churches needed to support foster families

Times-Herald – November 26, 2016

There’s a shortage of foster families in Georgia and in Coweta, and some see church involvement as one solution. Coweta has just 18 foster homes through the Georgia Division of Family and Children’s Services. Of that number, 16 are full-time; the other two provide respite care for other foster parents. At the end of September, there were 129 Coweta children in the foster care system. Because there aren’t enough local foster families, some Coweta children have to be placed in other counties – sometimes hours away – or in group homes.

US: When the Good Guys Ride into the Sunset, Leaving Their Algorithms Behind

Chronicle of Social Change – November 28, 2016

The push to embrace “predictive analytics,” an unreliable, racially biased method in which algorithms “inform” the decisions of caseworkers – decisions such as when to tear apart a family – is led largely by the same people who deny the very existence of a racial bias problem in child welfare, want to see far more families torn apart, or both. They seem to be willfully blind to the enormous inherent risks of unnecessary foster care placement, including the risk of abuse or even death in foster care.

Bangladesh: The less talked about abuse of children

Bangladesh Daily Star – November 19, 2016

Our culture has a deep-rooted tradition of punishing children harshly. Older generations especially took pride in disciplining their children through caning, flogging and other forms of physical punishment that would supposedly make disciplined, obedient human beings out of errant, rebellious children. Teachers practiced similar methods of corporal punishment in classrooms, the most common of which were slapping students’ palms with rulers and squeezing their fingers together with pens held between them.

US: A Question of Outcomes

Stanford Social Innovation Review – November 17, 2016

Across the United States, government officials, social entrepreneurs, nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, and impact investors talk about the need to pursue not just program outputs but “positive outcomes”-results that make a genuine difference in beneficiaries’ lives. They talk about adopting models that are designed to focus attention on such outcomes: public-private partnerships, collective impact projects, pay-for-success (PFS) initiatives. And they talk about rigorously using data to track progress toward a given set of outcomes. But all of this talk presupposes that everyone agrees on the meaning of “positive outcome.”

Norway: One in three dentists refrained from reporting suspected child neglect or abuse

Dental Tribune International – November 17, 2016

Owing to its good public health system, 98 per cent of Norwegian children between the ages of 3 and 18 regularly see a dentist. Public dental clinics are thus in the unique position to identify cases of possible neglect or abuse in this vulnerable population and notify the authorities. A nationwide survey among 1,200 public dental hygienists and dentists has now examined how often dental professionals actually reported concerns about child welfare to the Norwegian child protection agency, Barnevernet.
