CBS San Francisco – June 27, 2016
Now that the Oakland police sex scandal is making national headlines, a Washington DC based anti-trafficking group is pressing the media to stop using what it considers harmful terminology to describe the 18 year old at the center of the controversy. “Many, if not most of them come directly from our foster care system, are kids that have been abused or neglected as children, and so they’re really lured and manipulated by traffickers, and then repeatedly raped for profit,” Yasmin Vafa, Executive Director of Rights4Girls told KCBS.

Ethiopia: Raising My Voice for Ethiopian Girls (Opinion)
Huffington Post – June 27, 2016
I am optimistic that by 2030, girls will take a step forward in transforming communities at the national and international level. In Ethiopia by 2030, I want to see girls dressed in their traditional wear going to school safe and filled with hope, never having to choose between being an Ethiopian girl and being successful. I want to see an Ethiopia where girls’ education is not hindered by harmful traditional practices or cultural beliefs that force girls to follow in the footsteps of their mothers. I want to see the eradication of female genital mutilation and child marriage.

United Kingdom: Economist Editorial Claims ‘Minor Forms’ Of Female Genital Mutilation OK
Huffington Post – June 27, 2016
Activists are up in arms over an article suggesting “minor forms of genital cutting” should be permitted. An editorial published in the Economist on June 18 proposes that, since efforts to ban female genital mutilation (FGM) haven’t succeeded in eliminating the practice, a new approach should be considered: Allowing small “nicks” to the genitals, which would cause “no long-lasting harm” to girls, according to the piece.
