I just finished reading the Post Memorial Day blog and thought about the students that I work with as a School Social Worker. Certainly, the idea that many of the children are suffering from PTSD is true! The most difficult aspect to overcome (as Mike pointed out), is that these children do not "know" normal. They believe that life is dangerous and unpredictable. Their "normal" is chaotic, abusive, unstable, unsure, and unpredictable. They do not trust anyone. They do not believe that adults will follow through with what they say, they do not feel they are treated fairly, they do not have boundaries, and they do will purposely sabotage good relationships.
The greatest impact an adult can have on children that live in toxic homes is to be consistent, stable and to show up when you say you'll show up!
Mike eloquently describes the difficulties facing our children today. Especially the children in "the system". We, as caring adults, must advocate for the children and fight for early intervention, mental health services and stability. The more we "pay" now, the more we'll "save" later!
